Do you paint first the face completely with a standard flesh color and then start toning?
Or you add the toning directly on the face as it is?

...Can you guys give me the Humbrol or Tamiya number that you use for flesh?

Humbrol oil paint ref: Matt 63 or 61 for flesh colour but need to be mixed...
I don't know for Tamiya acrylic paint as I don't use acrylic...

When you mix the amount of paint does'tn dry it up faster then you can paint the details, i have been busy since i am home from work from a operation, and i have still some time ,,,
i going to practice alot sinc i like your stile of painting mannequin, the only thing i findis when you paint at evening in the kitchen ore so with artificial light collers can be stronger than expexted,,,i use waterbased model paint revell

I only use oil paint really much more workable and only under natural light but of course, painting under sunshine or by foggy weather can change a little the manner you color the face. The amount and mixtures of colors and how to use them is really variable and can change from one mannequin to another...more or less dry or diluted according to the desired effects but also how to layer the colors, and blurred them by brushing...But because I don't use systematic technics, it's always difficult to explain visual effects with words...otherwise the inspiration make the rest!

Here again that's really depends of the mannequin base color before painting but even if I often start directly on the original flesh colour base when that one have a good tone, after various painting steps and at the end, 90 to 100% of the original surface is covered...As it's always better to show than speak for that kind of thing, here is a picture showing the different step from the original (already nice) Hindsgaul mannequin base to the final painting step which can gives you an idea of the way I use.

But it works also for an old Hindsgaul mannequin base perfect for militaria display with rather good face before...

Yeah that's not a nice mannequin face Thierry. It's a French production, i own 2 my self.
They have huge eyes and a badly shaped head which doesn't help much with headgear. You did it well as usual. Thanks for showing.

Actually the mannequins are not what the French have done better!
...But the ones you show are not French if I'm right but rather Dutch from BDC MANNEQUINS...but anyway, the French brands which treat the subject are not much better!

...The faces physiognomy make the difference for the final personality of a display and as often said, there's a real lack of "character" mannequins for our hobby...This is the reason why I'm working since one year now on my own brand that I especially studied and developed for collectors and which will be available next April/May 2015...preview, some pictures of the two prototypes heads I designed...as you will see, they are still in unpainted resin and eyes have been only temporarily simulated by pens and remove since as these heads have been used for moulding process before production...I'll talk about soon...

i am sure i bought them from a French seller at ebay. He was advertising them as perfect mannequins for military display because of the small chest diameter etc.

Your prototypes look promising. Please inform us when they will be ready for sale.

It's important to have small head circumference, like the Webster heads, so that the small size headgear can be displayed

I'm also looking forward to show you more because they will be not only heads even if it is their realistic faces and their "tough heads" was the main characteristic sough,
The TROOPER-MANNEQUINS will be high quality fibre full mannequins of smaller size 1.76 cm/5.8 ft with 38 cm/15 inch shoulders width. With removable half feet for wearing all kind of vintage boots, articulated arms and prehensile hands for holding various equipment, delivered with 40's style wig of "fake real" hair, realistic moustaches of 2 kinds (WWI & WWI style) but all over this with lifelike hand painting on faces and hands much more detailed & realistic that what exists on the market and close to what I realise with my painting customization but factory made!
I'm working on since almost one & a half year and all was more longer than I planed mainly because of my requirement for a quality product with special features but all is now designed, sampled and approved for production that will be launched next month...so, I'll be back soon with a special thread for them...

...But meanwhile an update with my last customannequin realised from a Herbert Jung, an uncommon old and nice German brand of shop mannequins with thin size and mainly expressive face before...and of course after customizing!
As so many, this one will be a German Landser and was requested by the owner with small scratches and wounds for a combat display related to the battle of the Bulge.

Mark i was looking for some modellers grass to create the facial hair.
In your early posts you mentioned static grass.

I found 2 different kinds. One that is like granules and the other which is in flock format.
Which one do you use?
