    Hitler's Silver Bowl

    Greetings Friends,

My wife and I went to a thrift store this evening to look around and one of the vendors there had a china doll collection with each doll in its own glass display case. I told her I didn't want any of the dolls but that I would give her $10 for one of the cases, she agreed, and this is the result.

I've had this nice Wellner serving bowl from Hitler's home for a while now, but have just had it sitting on top of my helmet cabinet, it just didn't seem quite right, so tell me what you gents think of this.

Here is a close-up. I think I'd like to sand this thing down and repaint it. By the way, the bowl is sitting on a small cardboard box that one of my wife's Christmas ornaments was in--don't tell her I took the ornament our or she will not be happy with me . The cloth that is covering the box is just a black cloth napkin--an item that I confiscated from the china hutch and pressed into service.

For a second there I thought you were going to say that you got the case and the A.H. serving bowl for $10

Looks good! Nice set-up. My only comment is that the case looks a little big for the bowl, it's kind of getting lost in there. Maybe if you use a bigger (or slightly taller) box underneath?

            Thanks for sharing.

              Hi Chris

Can you tell something about the origin of the Hitler bowl ?

              Regards , Johan

                Hey Chris,
Looking good as usual! Nice displays, even if you have to liberate some of the little ladies things to help it out.

Thanks for all the nice words guys.

Lee--My wife hasn't noticed that I took her stuff yet for the display, but when she does, I don't think there will be any peach cobbler in my future. I'll have to find something more permanent later anyway though. By the way buddy, I'm getting out of the Air Force next year and moving back to Arkansas, so when that happens we'll have to meet up again and shoot the bull.

Johan--I have the full story on the silver bowl. However, I'm at work right now, so I don't have the details handy. What I can tell you from memory is that it came indirectly from a French veteran who was part of General Leclerc's 2nd Free French Armored Division. When this unit took over occupation of Hitler's Eagle's Nest, the French vet traded/purchased this item from a 101st Airborne vet who had liberated it. If you'd like the vet's name, PM me and when I get home, I'll look it up and be glad to send it to you.

Rob--I wish what you describe had happened. I love the stories of guys who find stuff like that at flea markets for pennies or find helmets put out with the trash on the side of the road, but stuff like that never happens to me. Anyway, you are absolutely right about the dimensions of the box that the bowl is in. I was working with what I had on hand last night because when I saw the case, I immediately got a mental image of what I could do with it and I just wanted to see how it would work. I will have to put my wife's ornament box back and she will want the napkin back when she notices it is gone as well. The box isn't doesn't even sit evenly, you can't really notice it in the picture, but the bowl leans to one side. What I think I will get permanently is a large block of wood and will get some black material that I can permanently attach to the wood.

Again guys, thanks for your specific comments and questions and the nice comments from pak 75, CLENTER, and Steve Campell.

Looks good Chris! I hear you about not getting the inexpensive prices! I seem to be the one that pays $2000.00 to the guy that found it for $3.00. best wishes,
