    Medal Cases

Those in the U.K. will be familiar with the national newsagent chain W.H.Smith ( I believe they have a branch in Paris too). As well as the usual range of books and stationery, they also sell art materials including rather nifty little cased sets of artist pastels, brushes, pencils etc etc.
I bought one of the sets of pencils, the boxes are real wood, nicely finished with brass hinges and snap fasteners. The inserts are cheap black vacuum formed plastic, easy to rip out.
I bought some artists foam board ( 1/4 thick foam with white laminate card facings), cut out slots to accept the pins on the reverse of the badges, covered the lid liner in white satin and the base with blue velvet ( both cheap offcuts from a fabrics shop)

The result, I think, gives a rather nice safe way to store and display badges, all at a very reasonable cost (The case and all the materials together cost just over $35)

Hi Gordon, you should have shares in WH Smiths You have certainly increased their sales this weekend. I think I will copy your idea too for my British cap badge collection Thanks for posting it.
        Cheers, Ade.

Why is it that in the UK it is virtually impossible to buy inexpensive display cases? It really annoys me!

Nice work though Gordon, it looks like a nice job you did on that.

Also after being out at lunchtime I noticed that you can purchase the same style of artist apparel box from a high street shop called The Works- Publishers Outlet, ostensibly a book shop but also sells other bits and pieces they are £5 cheaper than WHSmiths. Just thought I would mention it!

              Hello Gordon,
Very nice U-Boat collection, are the badges without crowns or eagles ’57 models?

              Thanks for sharing!

Richard, Thanks for the info on "The Works", there is a branch five minutes walk from my office so I'll check them out.

Dez, yes there are two 57s in there, one is very early with wartime style pin, the other is rather unusual in having a horizontal pin. 99% of 57s have vertical.

Working on the second U-Boat case now.
