    Glass display case for mannequin

Does anyone know if there is a place that sells a glass case that would hold a mannequin? The least expensive the better of course!

    Thanks,

    Mark

That's a good question - I've been in the market lately for a display case that I can set my torso mannequin in and have had no luck getting any information from sales people or manufactures in regards to the weight limits on the shelves.

I'm interested to see the responses!

And what about UV light? I heard that you should be carefull putting fabric behind glas. It fades mutch quicker (or something like that) .

The problem with large cases is the weight of the glass, maybe you should look for perspex? much lighter and a bit cheaper i believe. There should be no uv problems with glass as long as you keep it away from bright sources of light.

i have been tinkering with the idea myself for some time and found out that all displays are going to be extremely expensive if you purchased them made. i will share with you guys to the extent that my display idea has evolved. you can buy plexiglass or glass cut to size at your local home depot, lowes etc. same goes with wood. i will be using 3 boards of wood, which is much cheaper than glass, (i will consult with my local museum in order to get one that wont damage the uniforms) and use it to make a 3 sided box. i will then add a pane of glass to use it as a swing door to the front of the display. light damage occurs mostly in direct sunlight. i have put panes on the house windows of where my display is at to avoid that situation. any additions to the idea are welcome.

I can have one built by a neighbor who does this as a job but the cost is still going to be about $650.

Here are some of my ideas.

            1. Buy 3 wood frame doors with glass in the center. These can be bought for $105 each at the home center stores. Put the three together and use a solid back that will have a mirror attached to the length.

2.Use plexiglass and get some nice molding for the frame and corners put it together. Glass could be done the same way.

            3. Basically build it like a large aquarium and seal with clear caulking. The glass would slip into slots that would be routered out off the top and bottom for stability.

            4. I looked at IKEA for a case and they have them that are tall enough but you have to not put the wood divider inside and then you have a major stability problem. This unit runs about $350.

5.Some sort of metal corners and frame with plexiglass or glass.

Brainstorm it guys and maybe we can come up with a good case that is economical as well.

it seems that sparky and i are walking near the same route. still, that 105 per door is gonna add up real quick. i got the idea of the 3 boards from a display i saw in lowes selling for 40 dollars. it sort of looked like [_]. the boards were stuck together like a bookcase of sorts. i figured that in the open side you could ad a couple of hinges to hold a glass door cut to size. what you guys think?
