My father is a D-Day vet. Dad came ashore on Omaha Beach Sector Dog Green at 0705 hours on June 6th 1944. He was promoted from XO to Company Commander of Co.-B 121st Combat Engineers following D-Day, after the then current commander stepped on a landmine. He remained the companys commander for the duration of the war. He took part in battles in the hedgerows, Vire, St. Lo, Brest, and Julich to name a few places. He was instrumental in the capture of Ft. Montbarey outside of Brest when he and his men breeched the walls of the fort on September 16, 1944. ANyway I have some pictures of the stuff my dad brought home and I thought I'd share them.
Dad during a training exercise for the invasion:
Photo taken in December 1944 or January 1945 probably near Julich.
Falschirmjager helmet he picked up, he doesn't remember where he got it. I have posted more photos of this in the Falschirmjager forum when I was asking about preserving it.
Binoculars from the Submarine pens in Brest:
Sauer 38h:
P-08. He carried this as a personal sidearm for a while. Said the Germans looked at him funny when they saw it.
P-38:
A podium or wall banner he found in a house:
A compass that still works very well:
Dad had more things, but in the past few years he donated some of them to a local museum near his home. Those items included a small battle flag, Hitler Youth knife, a British Commando knife, a compass from a ME-109, and a Deactivated Schu Mine box that had been decorated with a cartoon by one of his men. I hope someday to get those items back, but I doubt it. If anyone can tell me about some of the items above I would like to know the trivia about them. My dad has told me what he remembers about how he came to possess them.
