      Nice one Marvin...

.....what are the origins of these items? I don't think I have ever seen them before. They are very interesting!!

Peter, Runes are alphabet characters used by the Germanic tribes and the Celtic people originating from Northen Europe. These have been used for well over 2,000 years. They were also used in Rune divination and a source of magic.
You will be familar with the Sig runes, symbol of Thor, the almighty thunder God, and represented by a double lightning bolt

These badges can be found in both glass and plastic, and were fundraisers for the HJ youth hostel programm.

If you look in the thread on HJ tinnies in the political badge forum I have listed the different translations for the scripts along with some other bits of info on the badges on page 4 of the thread.

Here is the description as provided by Colin Davies:

            Blut und Boden
            Erntesegen
            Heil
            Kampf
            Leben
            Sieg

            They were made in 1940.

            C.

            Fixed! Thanks Colin! marvin

Marvin you've cut'n'paste my description of another group - the cardboard youth hostel badges.

The description you were looking for was my post just below that one, here it is for you.

"They also are part of a set sold to raise money for the youth hostels, they are difficult to read because they are written in old Germanic script but there are 6 to collect:

                Blut und Boden
                Erntesegen
                Heil
                Kampf
                Leben
                Sieg

                They were made in 1940.

                C. "

This of course is very good news - because you have a full set, and very nice they are too!

Very nice, Marvin, I have never seen a complete set.

                    Thanks Ken!

OOOps! Thanks for the heads up Colin! I was tired last night. I'm sure glad you caught it. And yep! I like the good news that I have a set. I saw your post and thought I had the full set. Then when looking for it, instead of reading carefully, I did what I did and thought that I just read it wrong the first time. Thanks again! Marvin
