Congratulations! A mature attitude; how refreshing.

Today many individuals become defensive and strike like a cobra when delivered bad news.

I was burned myself when I went through the learning curve on these items.

You must have a true collectors heart - willing to learn.

Interesting to know about the handle details Joe. Based on your info, it seems my artillery stein may be a fake as well. I attached two photos of the handles on each of my steins so people can see what you mean by a "smushed" handle versus a standard pre-war type.

I was also able to find two more examples of the suspect "Hof" steins:

To klr:

Hard to tell without a 'hands on', but I think the odds are that your other
stein is 3rd Reich period. It does not have any of the immediate 'tell-tale' aspects of a repro.
