Please help me design my new 'War Room'!

Hey everyone, I moved into a new house about 6 months ago, so as always, the war room has to start over. However, I feel like we may be in this house for a while, so I am looking to do something extraordinary for my display.

I am hoping that you all can help me design, decorate, and think of ideas for this room. This will be an ongoing process. Don't worry about the budget, leave that up to me. Just think in terms of the sky being the limit.

I am going for mid-century modern look. Think back to the late 1940s through early 1960s. What would a veteran's office looked like a decade removed from the war? That is the look I want (with war trophy overfloweth)!

    Things that can't change:

    -desk
-book shelf (although a built in shelf would be a nice touch)
    -floor
    -wall structure/opening/door
    -ceiling lights

    Things up for change:

-display cabinets (built-in shelving or furniture up for consideration)
    -paint/paneling
    -molding
    -decoration

What is necessary in the design:

-Room for helmet storage - this is my bread and butter and I plan to expand my collection in the future
    -More book storage
-I would like to move some uniforms into the room, so it would be cool if I could figure out a way to hang some of them in here - I don't have many uniform items
-I would like the small items to be put up where little kids or cats can't run off with them, so that shelving would have to be elevated. Doesn't have to be full enclosed, but would be nice
-Lighting is important, but it must have the "feel" of being mid-century
-I need additional display space. Those trunks in the corner are filled with stuff. I have medals, flags/banners (can be folded), bayonets, knives, etc. that I would like to display, but can't currently.

First, I will post photos of what we are currently working with.

Here is a room which I absolutely fell in love with, that was posted several years ago by member ghostcinderella. This room is a 9/10 for me. I love the wood paneling and the mid century, "stuffy" and cozy feel that it has.

Here are some cool wood elements that I really like at a glitzy hotel I stayed at in Denver not too long ago. I would love to do something like this, but I don't even know where to begin in terms of designing something like this.

Give a man an opinion and you feed him for a day,
teach a man to use the "search" function on the WAF and you feed him for a lifetime.

Hey Jordan. That's going to be a fun project. When I had a 100% blank slate to work with a went with a custom oak built-in book case. Great way to display some items in the man cave along with your books in a classy way. You use materials and design elements to make it as retro as you wanted.

One other thing....I do like the look of that one display you posted. Sometimes a man cave can end up looking like a shrine to the TR era. I absolutely did not want that look. So, for overflow items and my overtly TR stuff I made sure that my man cave had it own man cave....

Blair, I used your "hidden door" concept on my bunker and it worked a charm. J

Jprdan, I looked at some 50's designs and it seems wood panneling is the thing. J

But those light fittings are hideous.

That's great Jacques. Your collection room is probably one of my very favorites out there.

The door leading the the 2nd man cave is just killer. What a awesome idea !!!!

Did you buy the book shelf or make it yourself ?
