I'm fairly sure that it's his outspoken manner and political beliefs. Some people's tastes don't lean toward his films, but his filmmaking talent is certainly not suspect. His films are always extremely well-crafted, with interesting subject matter.
I worked with him, years ago, on an episode of a childrens TV show I used to do, called "Ghostwriter", and he is supremely well versed in the mechanics and history of film. I don't think there's a craft on any set, whose job he couldn't do.
He was also very cordial and extremely helpful to the young talent on the show.
If he could just keep his sometimes foolish opinions to himself and just stick to what he does best, I believe he'd have a bigger fanbase.
