Can you imagine if this person, maybe even in old age, ever sat down and wrote a memoir about what they saw, did and experienced at the time? Does anybody know of memoirs like this?

Wounded and decorated at the front, but not able anymore to fullfill front-line duties he was sent to a camp.

      Aftermath

Interesting press photograph, note the British guards standing watch over the Women SS as they throw dead into the ditch.

Very interesting thread with some great KZ guard Ids. I think Robert's press photo was taken in Bergen-Belsen. I really love the Oranienburg phony! The issue date is a dead giveaway, as Oranienburg was already closed in 1939 . . no need to keep it open after Sachsenhausen was set up in the mid-1930's.

I wouldn't make any claim to being a document expert, so I haven't a clue as to whether the Brandenburg pass is right or wrong, but before anyone throws out all their documents with Oranienburg and a late date it is worth noting that Oranienburg stamps in SS-TV documents do not refer to the camp that was, as pointed out above, closed in 1935. It refers to The Inspectorate of Death Head's Units and Concentration Camps that was established in Oranienburg in 1936 and remained there throughout the war.

I recently obtained this great little photo from a good friend of mine (you know who you are).

Pictured are KL Mauthausen SS "Totenkopf" Guards at rest in their SS barracks at KL Mauthausen. Note the Number 4 ("Ostmark") on their Shoulder Boards, and the early Style SS Overseas Caps.

                            Derek,

Good point. I had totally forgotten about the Inspectorate. Here is an aerial photo of KZ Sachsenhausen and surrounding area from the 1944/45 period where the Inspectorate building, the so-called T-Gebäude, is clearly marked with a circle. The photo is in an excellent history of the Inspectorate published by the Stiftung Brandenburgische Gedenkstätten (1994) that I picked up while visiting the Sachsenhausen camp memorial in 1998. I believe the building is still there.
