I recently had the opportunity to purchase a nice collection of ID’s which once belonged to a deceased german friend of mine. Some of them are matching with my research areas, I am happy to present you one today…
Hans-Gerd SCHÖLER was born 1919 in Schwetz a.d. Weichsel, moved then with its family to Paderborn, where its Father was a Doctor. He obviously was attracted by the military world and volunteered at the age of 17…. He had to wait some months and served first within the Service of Labour (R.A.D.)before being accepted into the I.(Reiter) Abt./Kav.Rgt.15 in Neuhaus Kreis Paderborn. A part of this cavalry Unit was used to create the Cavalry Squad from 169th Reco Group (Aufkl.Abt.169, 69.I.D.) on 26.8.39. Shortly after it, he became an officer-candidate at the Cavalry School at Krampnitz by Potsdam, and was part of the 2nd Session organized there (2.Offiziers-Anwärter-Lehrgang, Reiter Einheiten) from oct.1939 to January 1940. Coming back to the A.A.169 with the rank of a Lieutenant, in was in charge of forming recruits at the Kav.Ers.Abt.15 – still at Paderborn – and escaped then to the French campaign.
He really discovered the war with the Kradschützen-Btl.61 (11.Pz.Div.), from 8.40 until 18.11.41, taking part to the Balkan campaign and in Russia thereafter. The detailed List of the battles he took part can be seen page 32. He was lightly wounded twice, first in Berditchew and 2 weeks later in Stawitscheche. The third wound war more serious (18.11.41 in Jaswischtsche… if I decipher correctly this Russian place…). He was then in Hospital in Germany and was only fit to join a Front Unit in June 42. For a short time at the S.R.93 then Headquarter of the 13.Pz.Gren.Brigade. If anybody is able to give me more infos about this Brigade, I would appreciate it. He fell ill at the end of nov.42, a bad case of jaundice . Probably its Health was too weak to join the Front immediately, he was sent to “Fahnenjunker-Lehrgang 2 der Panzertruppe” from april 43 until august 1944. Interesting is the fact Schöler wrote unofficially the function he had within the Unit with a Pen at the right of the Page… Quite complicated to decipher, I read “Aufsichts-Offizier und Lehrgang-Führer”. The terminology used at that time is rather confusing, but after a careful Study of the official documents I have about this (let me thank here my Friend ARCHI / Uwe for his great Help !), this “Fhj-Lehrgang 2 d. Pz.Truppe” was the official Name of the School in Krampnitz at that time. On 1944, Aug.20th he joined the “Stab Schwere-Abt./Führer-Grenadier Brigade” at the T.ü.P. Arys and sent to combat in eastprussia. The Brigade was heavily engaged on the road between Goldap and Gumbinnen, and around the village of DAKEN (Kreis Goldap) where Schöller was killed in Action 1944, oct.23rd.
