Throughout the war years, several awards recognizing honorable acts that did not meet the criteria for the highest awards were instituted. These decorations provided the Wehrmacht leadership the ability to present awards on a broader scale without degrading the prestige of landmark decorations such as the German Cross and the Knights Cross. It is in this category of awards that the Roll of Honor Clasp of the Heer, Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine fall.

It is ironic that due to their late institution they were not widely presented and are at least every bit as rare as their more prestigious counterparts they were meant to protect. It is also noteworthy to point out that although its method of wear would suggest a relationship to the Iron Cross, that is not the case, and the clasps should be considered a separate award
