The hat is probably a converted Army visor hat.....the black band looks undamaged but the green wool appears well moth eaten in spots....the chin strap is incorrect for SS types, mismatched cap insignia....sorry but this is not a cap I'd want in my collection.....

I'm not the final word....but wanted to at least give you a reply...Sorry it's not better news.

Personally, I wouldn't dismiss it. The "under the hood" pic just doesn't look like the handiwork of a faker good enough to replace the band that well. Moths will attack wool of a certain composition and colour more readily, and so the apparent disparity between the mothing on the band and the crown doesn't really bother me. I'd really have to examine it to form a more solid opinion...

I would post it with more and detailed pictures in the Cloth Headgear forum:

The cap has a chance IMO also from a good seller (note: I did not say 'perfect')

It looks like a good ss visor with a police strap.

It has a great chance to be a good cap IMO.

Even if its not text book I would be happy with it "as is", as longs as its priced accordingly!
(there were many modified caps, especially among the foreign volunteers!

                        Thanks all,

A great discussion is started !

looks like a rebuilt Heer visor to me..
I dont think...we have just 2 skull holes...

yes that is a volunteers cap I think...

I have just a problem... no cross mark under the visor, very unusual for a period cap right ?

                        thanks

Plenty of period visors can be found with a smooth underside...

I'd like to see a clear straight-on of the eagle ... the skull looks to be a nicely worn Deschler, the eagle's head seems poorly formed ?

Not quite sure how this can so clearly be a 'volunteer's visor' .... it's private purchase from a Berlin retailer, available to anyone. Would the volunteer take off the SS or Heer strap and swap it ? Why ?

                              Franky IMO
                              In this pic
                              1. The markings/stains on the underside of the SB don't match up to any stains on the liner.
                              2. Untreated pasteboard, not a good sign. This would explain why there is only holes for a skull, because the pasteboard has been changed out.

                              Other obsevations
                              1. Heavy staining to the liner, mot so much wear to the SB. Also the staining looks off as if there was once a different sized SB matched to this liner.
                              2. That liner or better yet the SS stitching doesn't look centered in the cap if you use the visor as your reference.
                              3. As noted before the wear of the cap band really doesn't match up to the wear of the body of the cap.

A hands on would be needed but to me it screams (or maybe moans) Franky.
