      Michael,

An item like this is hard to authenticate so its really a question of whether your happy with it or not. As you pointed out, any rust under any white paint can be old and I have also seen original dug items where the rust has gotten up and under the original paint of the item. I dont think anyone here can honestly tell you whether its real or not. As for white paint not looking wartime, that is a very hard thing to call. I have seen 1000% percent original white paint jobs on items that looked to me as what I would instinctively feel is "postwar" and I have seen fake white camo jobs that made me feel instinctively that its wartime... so hard question to ask. I guess you could have the paint tested by a lab of some sort to test for a lead content...but that doesnt guarantee its real either. fakers use old paint and I know of a few fakers in the East that have a stock of old old paint just for that purpose... so the final question on one like this is, are you happy with it...

Why on earth would a soldier want to paint the inside of his canteen cup? and that shovel certainly wasn't used for it's intended purpose after painting. The soldier would also have a hell of a job once the snow went as that isn't just whitewash.

As robb says, never say never and the paint is old but those items are just odd. If anything i'd say there value would be less than if they weren't painted like that. If the seller is putting a premium on them for the paintjob then i'd walk away myself.

Mike - I am doubtful too, is the rust as red as it looks? Looks like active rust to me. What is the history of the items? Is there any marking that would make the shovel German?

Caught this thread late, but the paint on the inside of the cup was an immediate "no-go" for me. No soldier would have a reason to do it.

                        Regards,
                        Johnnie
