I have refurbished some original and Yugo 8mm ammo cans for reenacting use. My question is in regards to markings. I see photos of cans with various markings/numbers on them...such numbers, might they correspond to a "rack number" that was assigned to the MG?
For instance a number, let us say, 3471, is painted on the buttstock of the MG. Would the cans allocated to that gun/squad have the same number affixed to them as well. What of other gear...50 round drums, drum carriers...?
