hmm, it has rubber on the lid, to hold it tight?? not to spill something out, but what?? Soup?? it has two handles to carry it on the sides...perhaps to carry soup to the men?? Additional pictures will be up later today...

I have EXACTLY the same can in my collection, but I dont know what the markings Lu-E mean??? I saw another one about 2 years ago - but with additional paper labels - and the paper labels said, that it was carry can for artillery gunpowder. Were this purpose the only one they were made for? No idea.

Weitze has a similar one for sale, item nbr 24937 listed as a 'großer Transportkübel für Verpflegung' ; a sort of transportation-can used in a fieldkitchen...
Marcin, maybe the one you saw was re-issued in the field, pitty you don't have any pictures of it.

I believe you're not quiet right. I had the same thing in my collection.
It's in a excellent condition.
It's for the storage of 50 kg. GUNPOWDER. I wouldn't eat from that!
Look at the label. The size of the powder is also visible.
It's made from alluminium so you can't get a spark.

Yes,it was a powder/charges/propellant container, in fact, Lu. means "luftdicht" which means both airtight and watertight and it's found on many a "patronenkasten" and other ammo containers.....and "D" on the bottom of the gas mask container means "Dicht",i.e. hermetic!As to eating from it in spite of its intended use, well, now we wouldn't but my late father used to tell me that at a certain point during the war they(he and his comrades) started getting rice soup with maggots in it...at first they sort of started a "diet".....only to go for the maggots a few weeks later because they realized that they were "proteic" and there was no more meat to speak of....go figure...they'd have eaten anything no matter the container,in fact they'd have eaten the container as well!

The container is marked "Fp02". This means Füllpulver 02 = TNT!!! So you should really NOT eat from it...
