    Another Zeltbahn! + strange tentpole

    Hello to all,

As I already discribed (with foto's) in my thread about german tentpoles and tentpegs, I've bought 5 Original Zeltbahnen, 35 Tentpoles, 20 Tentpegs and smaller things, that all came with a box were they were storaged in.

I only want to know more about the things you see on the foto's.

    1. Did the germans have tentpoles that were "connected" . They look original to me.

    2. One of the Zeltbahnen has a Camouflage pattern that looks a bit like the "non german" ones. The model , the markings and all the other things look original. I can make more foto's. Just say were you need foto's of, to see if he's original.

    Who can help me?

    Greetings,
    Frank

Strange, it seems to have the small yellow 'dots' that you see on Swiss splittertarn.

Without having a copy in my hands I am guessing the tentpole is a WWII US tentpole of the earlier variety with the steel fittings. WWI US folding tentpoles had brass hardware. Later in the war they went to the separate three piece style that you see being carried even today.

                Hello,
I never would have came up with that ! Well, atleast it's original.

I looked it at the internet, and you're right.

As to your Zeltbahn, there is nothing really unusual about it. You can often see this extra pattern - what my friends call "corn cob"_ on minty originals, and on some zelts you can see it inside the neck holes if you look. Often on a ratty one it can be seen inside the doubling on the edges, if you have seams undone.
I do have a very good condition late war zelt, with pressed paper buttons and no grommets, but it never had the extra pattern on the underside. Sometimes this pattern is quite faint and the texture quite small.
On Swiss zeltbahns that copy the German pattern exactly, they did an extra good job making sure this subtle element could be seen on the underside. On the more common Swiss ones, the ones that have the green lines across the brown splinters, the underside is much more garish and the "corn cob" much larger. Hope some of this makes sense.

                  Dave

                    Hello Dave,
Thank you very much for the very detailed information. I'm very happy to hear that it's an original one. I already noticed that all the other things did look original. he's also very nicely marked.

Thank you again. I can finally sleep well.

                    Greetings!
                    Frank

I can only agree with David above.

The "corn cob" pattern is more pronounced on less worn examples, although later war material tends to be "softer" and doesn't display this pattern as much as earlier or pre-war Zeltbahnen.

The two aluminium eyes seen on the corner on the long straight edge are typical for earlier Zeltbahnen. Examples with only one instead of two eyes at this position tend to be dated 1943 or later.

For what it is worth, the multi-section pole joined by the metal fitings is not like any German equipment I have seen before now.

                      /David
