Compass Attachment ?

I have a standard aluminium CLK type soldiers marching compass & leather lanyard with fob / button hole type arrangement,

Question is how were these attached to the soldier or tunic, were they from a button hole in the tunic or over the shoulder from y-straps, does anyone have any pictures of them attached in period use. thanks
