Its a genuine piece, Zahn is correct you are just missing the top fuze not hard to find, just look on ebay for that they appear now and then for 20-40.

Glenn,
The handle is made like a baseball bat. Markings on the bottom indicate that is was held into position and turned, this explains the surface feature of the handle, Both of these factors are good to see, Metal to is pressed into the wood on repros its glued or made in a smaller circumference for a snug fit.

The can is real, paint and date are correct font etc.

Sander, just one more question. What is the finish on the endcap? Is it unfinished or is there a phosphate finish on it?

Its unfinished, although the top part looks to have something it doesn't make sense to phosphate the top and leave the side uncoated.

Hi Sander,

The Maker for your M43(jaj44) was Fahrrad und Metallwerke, L Bauer & Co Kleinauheim am Main. I have a relic M43, the maker on the handle is gck 44. It is identical in every respect to yours including the hole in the handle which I assume was to thread string to hang it from equipment.
