    Zippers vs no zippers

I realize the zipper was invented in the late 1800s (in America)...and came into common use on clothing in 1925...

I see some zippers on WW2 clothing/unifroms...but also a lot of buttons and lacings.

Is there any rhyme or reason to this?

I looked through some 22 pages of threads...but no definitive answer...lol.

I am wondering if the use of zippers (or non-use) is a quick and easy way to ID items?

    Thanks again!

They can be. Zips used in wartime German items were made by a few companies. Some of the most well known ones are as follows:-
Zipp (should be DRP marked on the back)
RiRi (Both metal and early "plastic")
    Elite
    Rapid
    PRYM
    Wico

I am sure other members will chime in as well.

        Thanks (and noted!)

So do we know when/why they used zippers...vs. laces or buttons?

I have a pair of post-war breeches (not riding - they are dress, or maybe for motorcycle) that have zippers (leg and fly). But most of the photos I see have leg laces and button flies.

Very tough to answer, button fly was the norm for Wehrmacht issue trousers however some Luftwaffe pant used zips. As for breeches, laces would be the norm BUT I have seen some original pairs with zips. Also some BDM items used ips like the shirts and ski pants.

At the end of the day it all depends on the zip in question.

Thanks! Just knowing both options were in use during that time helps!
