interesting initial pic includes at least two fat juicy pionier spades in holders...thing is, as im not sure other threads have laid to rest, is the fob options on these spades when worn without pionier back packs-i believe a small strap could have been employed to hold the haft down firmer on the fob, to stop the damn spade flapping around during a march or run/walk. so far ive seen just normal fobs and one fob with a cross strap for the haft-though its unclear if that last one was impro or factory made.

as far as these eyes can make out at this time, the foreground pionier spade cover has just two closure flaps. not three. and there is a loop round the haft, to stop it from aflapping.

Let's keep on studying that photo:

-Is #1 a pair of combat Slippers?
-are the national colours missing on this helmet #2?
-is this #3 a Reichsheer mess kit?

                        helmets

At least two helmets have a dull finish and are clearly unlike the early glossy finish helmets. If repainted then the national colors might be gone or so it seems.

When I first saw this picture, I thought Tom was doing some very late spring cleaning

Superb picture Ron, thanks for posting. What I find most interesting is that there aren't any gasmask cannisters on show?
