Hi there.

It was used to power the light source for the MGZ34 and MGZ40 optic used on MG34 and 42 lafette mounts. Some of the guys on the firearms or optics forums may be able to give you more detail, including whether they were used on other types of optic.

I've seen them in your feldgrau, dunkelgelbe and also plain leather.

This kind of battery box could be used with any field optic, but mostly known as for the MGZ.
