Has a sidenote regarding the use of standard field blankets in mounted units,
sometimes the blanket was folded over the Woilach (saddle blanket) to provide a extra padding for the horse. This was done only when the horse had lost weight during the campaign to ensure a correct saddle fit.
Another method was to fold the sleeping blanket inside the Woilach, so that it was also not in direct contact with the saddle.

I have also a few to share.

This question was already asked in previous threads but can we reach consensus about the fact that stripes were always "woven into the blanket"?

Or do certain members believe that late(r)-war variants could have the stripes stencilled/painted?

Intersting. I personally have never seen that, but there are lots of things I have not seen. Sounds plausible though.
As I mentioned I truly believe the reason all military blannkets have stripes on the long ends and even socks have the size rings at top etc, is so in low light you will be able to tell which end is the long end or which end to stick your foot into. I know this just from lots of practical experience using them.

I'm sorry if my question appears stupid for most of you, but were these saddle blankest used also by the soldiers in a field - as a "typpical" blankets?

IMO there is no such thing as a stupid question, asking questions is best way to learn anything, as well as being able to admit when wrong.
Ja....they used there own blankets as saddle blankets too. The one next to the horse is usally too wet from sweat and they usually stink really bad if not washed weekly, so the extra blanket would have been used by the Soldat for sure. N

The Woilach, the saddle blanket in heavy wool, folded in 4 or 6 and refolded whenever needed to have always a clean side on the horses back.
When it was possible to air dry this blanket the dirt was brushed of, these were also used to cover up the horses in colder periods, using the Deckengurt to fix them.
The sleeping blanket on his own is to thin to use has a replacement saddle blanket.
