Gas mask cannister

Picked this up the other day, in pretty good shape,
question being is it has the german style latch assembly
but inside the packet is clearly Spanish. It's dated 1937
and it also had a M33 Italian gas mask inside.
Which is it German or Spanish?

It is german pre war canister with spanish spare glasses ( and italian gasmask as you wrote ) and nothing more. As far as I see it is short version of canister so most probably after new canisters came out ( large one ) it was provided to auxilary troops or had been exported to other countries and most probably that's why it has foreign gasmask ( Germans used captured equipment in paramilitary like Luftschutz and auxilary units like HiWi ). It also could be simply post war put together made by some collector or someone who thought it could look good in this configuration but who doesn't know how it supposed look like in original form.
