          Hello Tom,
Nice messkit but the model is 1910...
made mainly in enameled steel during WWI
used in the Reichswehr until 1927 when the variant was adopted.
made in aluminium for the political/paramilitay formations in the TR era
you're right, they stopped the production around 1940.
The provision for the fork/spoon should be present on all M10

I recall seeing this type in late war black enameled steel - so are We positive about that production stop ?

                Hello Michael,
i've seen blue and also black enameled M10 messkits in the past. I don't remember if any of the black was dated, the blue one was dated 1917. I always assumed that even non dated ones were late WWI production.
In the TR era, i have never seen them made with anything else than aluminium. Was the one you saw dated ?

around 1940 is a timeframe as the well known german manufacturers inertia may have active also for this type of messkit. Supposedly discontinued around 1940...but effectively ??

I dont remember if these messkits were dated, its been a while science I handled them, maybe You are right - maybe it was some 1918 ersatz production. I will pay closer attention to these messtins now

The german army used this pattern until the end of WWI because they had nothing else to use...it would be logical to think that it has been discontinued early in the WWII to save material and produce more M31 messkits.
Early SS troops were equipped with this aluminium M10 messkit before being equipped with M31 ones...so maybe this is what happened also for the other organisations that used the M10 pattern in alu before the war...

I have three of this pattern. First is made of steel, with black enamel, unmarked. Second is made of aluminium, unmarked. Both have fittings for fork and spoon. Third is made of aluminium and ESB 28 marked and dated. It does not have fittings for spoon. I also have mess tin without pan. It is HRE 36 marked and dated and also Does not have fittings for spoon.
