airholes??...was this used for transporting a signaling pigeon under fire? no signs of birds if so.

so seriously, radio, phone or transistor carriage equipment? holes to prevent over heating of some active electrical element? if not, why the airholes? surely this aint a bunkered up dining accessory to protect the cheese during a besieged banquet? the oval side clasp reminds me of verbandkisten catches...so im reckoning its german ww2, possibly civi...luftshutz... and the carrying strap may have gone on it later, perhaps an improv replacement....

                    Hi,

The holes are not for air, but were originally where the screws were. Holding a wooden fitting on the inside, which most likely held a piece of optic in place, or other delicate measuring equipment.

My estimate is German WW1, for a sight of somekind.

                    regards
                    Martin
