What is this leather pouch for?

Does anyone know what this pouch was for?
This pouch is almost identical to one for the Phantom device used in tapping field phone lines, but has a partition inside (therefore Phantom will not fit) with cloth tapes presumably to make it easy to pull out the content and a snap-down holder inside the lid. It is Wa marked, so no doubt about WW2 vintage.

Batteries make sense in view of the pullout straps. In that speculative scenario what would be held under the lid by the snap down tab?

It is for a breast-microphone. I had one almost 18 years ago, but I can't really tell what the different parts was. The main thingamajigg is the metal box with a swiveling microphone funnel of bakelite....
