KM Sextant

Hi

I just get this Sextant from and old fisherman.
He get it in the end of may 1945 from a German KM man.

The fisherman had overpainted the eagle many years ago.
So my question is, should i take the paint away and see if it possible to get the eagle visible?

Or should i leave it as it is?

I would remove the paint. If you use Paint thinner, make sure you do not bear down hard or you could damage the original paint.

I agree, if it's only painted I would remove the paint very carfully.

A most wonderfull sextant in its box

sure , it's well worth removing the paint !! IMO it is safer to use some oven-cleaner to remove the paint - spray, leave couple of mns and rub with clean cloth, repeat untill the "new paint" is gone. If you are carefull you will not damage the original paint.
