    Accessories of Map Case

    Hi Guys
I ask myself some questions about the contents of a map case of a troop commander (obergefreiter/unteroffizier) Infanterie/Panzergrenadier.

I think firstly that the contents of the map case were different according to the rank and the function (I imagine the contents of a map case of a troop commander different from that of a compagny commander)

Secondly, I think that it took what it wanted and that which it needed.

I imagine the contents of a troop commander like that:

    -Map Case
    -Marching compass
    -Map Sleeve
    -Maps
    -Rubber
    -Ruler
    -Map measuring device
    -Pencil
    -Pencil sharpener
    -Drawing pencil
    -Colour pencil

I think that they don't need square, protractor, distance measuring meter, map grid scales (KW27), caliper, ... (that would correspond to the company commander more)

    What do you think?
    Best regards, Olivier

this is a good thread Olivier. I too am interested in what a rank of the ones you list would have in the map case. I have a Feldwebl who of course carries a map case and I want to deck it out with all the goodies He would carry to do His mission. so c'mon guys and help 'ol Olivier and Me out. I know Pierre must have a good idea. He sells alot of this type stuff. waiting patiently... Glenn

      Hello
Ink pad to stamp documents/ID's etc...
      Stamps for stamping documents/ID's etc...
      Ink pen
Bottle of ink for the pen
      Paper clips
Thumbs tack ( spelling?) to affix documents/maps
a special booklet to write orders ( I can not remember what it is called)
Or just a plain booklet .
That is what comes to mind right now.
They would carry different things depending on their status , but overall , more or less carried the same primary things.
      Regards
      P-Y

          Thank you Guys

Dirk, very very nice map case
          I you colour pencil (I don't find any )

Pierre Yves, the order booklet is a very good idea but as regards the ink pad, the stamps, ink pen, ink bottle, i am not convinced for a troop commander (infantry) at the front.
I don't see the utility for him at the front (to stamp what???) and the drawing pencil make the deal very well (I don't see the soldier leaving his ink pen and his ink at the time of a assault and imagine that the bottle breaks in the map case )

it is my point of view but is very agreeable to discuss it

          regards, Olivier

                Hello Olivier
Like I mentioned , it depend on the status of the men issued the map case.
What do you thing the " der spiess" carried ?
Soldier at the front could not move around without orders , if stop by the Feldgendarme without order , they would have been arrested !!! so they needed stamped orders , the papers had to be stamped by whoever issued it.
I mentioned these items because they have been found in map-case.
I even found a little folding knife in one of the pens holder ? for what you might ask ? who knows ?, maybe for his breakfast !.
Complete and untouched map case are rare .
I think there is a basic list somewhere , of items issued with the map case .
                Regards
                Pierre-Yves

very true Pierre. I think many of Us forget how strict the Third Reich was, especially with paper work. I will admit, when I read your list I also thought you were going on too high of a rank but when you think about what you stated I now completely agree about those items. Glenn
