Thats funny. A few years ago, a fellow collector showed me pics of this mask, and they were in posetion of a friend of his. I will have to find out how it got in Normandy.

      Hi
This gasmalk is displayed in the Bayeux memorial museum. I have already seen it but I don't know if this is the real gem.
      Regards

Yep, Denis, it is indeed displayed overthere. It almost looks like a ground-dug! Were was it found? I assume in the Battle of the Buldge -area, no? somebady can confirm this?

        cheers

I would like to know why the unit is "I/ SS PZ RGT. 1". I find this rather strange. It should be "I./SS PZ.-RGT. 1". This is definitvely the common spelling for this kind of abbreviation.
Peiper was in Normandy, wasn't he ?

Peiper was in Normandy, wasn't he ?
But normally he still would have his gasmask in the Ardeens? Or he left this one in Normandy, that's also possible...

Also, isnt it unusuall just to see the regiment written in a mask? I know none of the masks I have ever seen had the unit.

Also, it is interesting this seems to be one of the gas mask boxes with a piece of rubber inside the cover to make it nicelly waterproof.

                  Hello John,

You asked me about Malmédy in the Fj Forum, but I will answer here because the gas mask can is here. If you want to discuss this topic further we should begin a thread about it in the Association Forum.

In brief, 72 US POW's (not 80) were shot at Malmédy on Dec. 17, 1944 during the battles in the Ardennes. Peiper was NOT responsible for the shooting of the US POW's, and he was not even there. The SS men were under his command, but no orders to shoot prisoners was ever issued by anyone in Leibstandarte. The highest ranking soldier present was, I think, Oberscharfürer Siptrott. He claimed the shooting began when some US soldiers tried to escape. The actual truth of this event will probably never be fully known. IMO Peiper was falsely convicted.

Peiper was murdered in the summer of 1976 by French Communists; I remember hearing about it that day on the radio.

                  Regards,
                  John
