It seems reasonable that the M34 tornister would have been replaced by the M39 model. In fact, the M34 continued to be manufactured. Here is a mid- to late-war M34 tornister marked with an RB number, with mismatched shoulder straps.

It has the black leather and steel hardware usually seen on the M39 model.

The RB number dates this pack to no earlier than late 1942.

The strap on the top in this photo is unusual and may have been taken from a paramilitary or civilian pack.

The other strap has a faint early maker stamp and a E37 depot stamp as well.

The majority of the fabric inside is the same stuff used to make many bread bags and rucksacks from this period. The mess kit pouch is a different material, maybe tropical uniform material (?).

This is an early M34 tornister that is complete and as-issued. It is named, unit marked, and the shoulder straps are matching. I find that this type of Tornister seem to be the most valued by collectors. This example is complete with all early features.

                  All the hardware is aluminum.

The pack is dated 1935, these clips are standard on early packs of this vintage.

The shoulder straps are matching and dated 1937. I am not sure what the "B" is for, Berlin depot?

Inside, the pack is stamped 13./J.R.69 II. Infanterie-Regiment 69 was part of the 20. Infanrterie-Division from Hamburg.

The depot stamp on the pack is E35.

This is a maker stamp that I have seen on many of these packs, Franz Brehme Walsrode 1942. The pack itself has no special features.

Here is a WWI style pack, as used by paramilitary units in the Third Reich. These type of packs were also used by Heer soldiers.
