gas mask canister number

I need to know the location on the gas mask canister that would have had the soldaten's 3-4 digit number painted onto it. I am a german re-enactor,and I would like to hand paint my number onto the gas mask can that I have. Anyone's help on this would be greatly appreciated,photos would be great also. Thank you. I have aprox. 16 gasmasks and most numbers are located as shown below
sometimes a little more to the left.
