Does any know what this was for. Thought it might be for a ski competition.

While the item itself could very well be period original the ss Mark looks to have been added separately. Different thickness of characters.
Looks to me like someone's trashed a period pin to pass it off as ss

I agree......if the SS runes were in a similar engraved style as the other lettering, we wouldn't be as suspicious, because the other hand-engraving looks authentic.
