    Camp Guard?

    Morning,

I picked up a number of photographs, awards, flags etc. from someone who’s father had been an active volunteer in the British Legion.

Amongst the items is this photograph. Am I right in thinking that this man was a concentration camp guard?

    Thanks

Given the lad's age that's unlikely ... more probably a member of the 'Totenkopf' Division or one of the Totenkopf Infantry Regiments.

I cannot identify the waffenfarbe coloring on his shoulder boards. The color does appear to be very dark though, camp guards shoulder boards were coffee brown in color and the contrast from the black board and brown waffenfarbe does sometimes stand out in period B&W photos. That said, I agree with what Ian said.

Does not the man in picture look as though he might be a foreign volunteer?

He (and what appear to be his sisters) look slightly Slavic/Eastern European but that's slightly stereotypical.

He SS button cap and possible soutache most likely make this earlier that 1941 for reference...possibly as early as 1939 or so...Billbert

Also, the left facing TK tab is a relatively early type of tab worn by the division. It was discontinued for the more common type tabs worn later war. I don't have solid dates on this. Additionally, the left facing TK tab is often seen worn by SS-TV personnel.

Note that one must also recognize that the left facing tab continued to be worn throughout the war though by those that had them in their possession, so using it to put a concrete date on a photograph can be problematic.
