This should give you a better clip of a close-up of the collar/tab in question.

Of course the side discussion is off track and I too like to stick to the point. Just one last thought to Robert H´s harsh input:
I didn´t like the attitude that killing any unarmed person has a moral justification, but it might be conceivable. If you see a group or a nation responsible for a deed you easily stirr up real hatred and blood vengeance no matter what nation you belong to.
Sorry Robert H this has nothing to do with age but with morals, no matter if the victim is a Russian, German, Indian, Vietcong or, or.... banning people for not liking POW/civilian killings is a bit embarassing. I just chose the avenger example as it was to this wider issue and a a very crude idea of settling a score and surely doesn´t reflect the views of all Jewish people as I don´t think in such categories of national hatred.
well back to the tab issue- sorry for the deviation.

Is this a runes tab or a Totenkopf tab?
(Both were commonly worn in the later years of camp personnel).
Cheers, Chris.

I think it is a bit ludicrous to assume the man had no combat awards, they were almost certainly swiped just like his tab - And not necessarily ripped off. And really, so what if he didn't ?
If he had his head clubbed open I wouldn't feel sorry for him, but murder is murder nonetheless. You cannot with any validity claim righteous, vengeful passion as an excuse, else all of the Germans who were executed for killing Allied airman who parachuted out of their aircraft after dropping high explosives on woman and children would have been able to use the same excuse.
That said, I might have bashed open his head if I was there, I also might have shot an Allied airman if I was a German. Really tough and fruitless to use the standards and morality that we know against those that prevailed in those mad times.

I totally agree- if the deed and the revenge are linked I would probably act the same if I could way no matter on what side- in this case even with no moral doubt (f.e. as a inmate in a Concentration Camp or in a Russian Gulag). In order not the distract the thread (as it really got off course) I started a thread in the Community forum about discussion culture on the WH forum. As I am quite shocked what thin layer of civilization some have.
The debate about morals was about hindsight and opinions not about being in the crucible of war.
SORRY for the off topic incursion- therefore I shifted the disussion

gj,
I can post it tonight, the one in the book is an NCO tab, not piped, so probably did not come from the Obersturmfuhrer in the footage.
The clips on that site start with the officer and a man in civilian clothes being ushered by some GI's to have them filmed in front of the rail car with the "Dachau K.L." marking on it (made by US troops?). Here are some screenshots.

The camera pans each man from head to toe. The SS man does not speak, but the other guy is quite talkative.... his attitude seems to be "why you are filming me?". Any lip readers here that can translate what he is saying?
It would be interesting to know who these guys were and their fate...

If someone cut the tab off with a piece of the collar that it was sewn onto, I would like to think that the cloth material was still there. Who knows what a GI mght do in his 'idle' time though???
PS- I'm going to post my vertical 'k' tab in a separate thread. I believe that it has a good chance of being an officer tab. It looks like, in hand, that it had litzen sewn around the edges at one time. Or, I might just be wishing hopefully and this was simply the sewing that secured it to the collar. It is Offiziere/NCO quality.
