Hello all,
Came across this Totenkopf as it was being offered for sale and thought I would post about it for reference. Sold here in May 2011 for $6,900:
http://www.rockislandauction.com/vie...id/52/lid/1909
Here is the auction description:
Formed in 1937, the 3rd Totenkopfverbande "Thuringen" was one of the units folded together to form one of the first combat ready units of the Waffen-SS, the Totenkopf Division, and participated in the invasion of Poland, chiefly performing "security actions" behind the lines. Though technically separate from the Waffen-SS, the SS-TV units were seen by Himmler as a personal reserve force, leading to a great deal of intermingling and exchange between the groups. Coat is black wool with black inner lining, labeled "MASSCHNEIDEREI/ ANDR. STOCKL/ NURNBERG" near the collar, "Herr: F. MESSERLE/ Datum 15.11.1938. No.9" inside the right inner pocket and the RZM/ SS "ROCK SS" label, numbered "188" and "128113", inside the left pocket. Information is limited, but research does show a Friedrich Messerle as a member of "Thuringen" who later became part of "Totenkopf". The exterior of the coat bears the silver cord accent shoulder board on the right shoulder, bullion deaths head and 4-pip tabs on the right and left collars, which are trimmed in silver cord, early pattern swastika armband with red field, white cloth circle and black satin trim and swastika on the left sleeve, and the black cloth and silver bullion "Thuringen" wristband. Also included are a pair of black trousers with white trim and RZM label numbered "30/ 17728" and a black cap with satin band, white piping, metal eagle and deaths head badges, silver chinstrap, brown leather sweatband and white lining with "59/ Stirndruckfrei/ Deutsches Reichspatent" marked plastic diamond and "Stubaf. F. Messerle/ Oranienburg" tag.
Obvious junk and want to post the details I got from the seller here.
