    Can you tell me what this tab is, real fantasy? Never seen this before. As always your help is valued.

        Tab

        Even though there ARE period tabs with homemade or unusual buckrum or "backing", it's the exception rather than the rule. Never seen backing like this. Tabs ARE constructed with cris-crossing thread sometimes, but usually not sloppy like this. My guess is that the metal device may be period, though i don't know what for. It's possible it's a real piece, but I highly doubt it.
