    Officer Upgrade Handshcar tab

Not sure if this one was discussed here before, but it was on the Estand a little while ago. It then found its way to Gottliebs auction for the second time. I do like this one, but wanted to see what you guys had to say about it especially regarding the upgrade.

A hard to judge collar tab. The base tab is original and shows a lot of wear and age. The officer piping has some wear as well, on some spots, as seen in the photos. Original upgrade officer or not? That is the question. Do you have it in hand? Does the piping show more wear? A collar tab like this has to be very believable without a solid provenance.

I do not wish to rain on anyones parade. No insult intended. Whoever you are ok? I wrote that this is a rare tab, if original, and I am a sceptical person by nature. The only way to survive collecting SS, in particular. I think this collar to should be investigated further. Perhaps it is good. But it is too easy to add an officer piping to a Dachau tab and viola. That is why wear is very important and especially provenance. We all want whats truly original, right? The one who follow all will be the eventual winner. I leave this to each and everyone to make up his own mind regarding this tab.

              Tab

The piping "upgrade" is not convincing, IMHO.

I remember seeing the thread and the post on the Estand. I liked it then and I still like it now. I prefer the worn tunic removed tabs. This is the second time in a row that it has appeared on Craig's auction page. Maybe the first sale never went through?

To be completely honest I am considering going for this tab, but I am still somewhat of a novice when it comes to SS cloth.

With no disrespect to you Dave I don't see how without solid provenance I could say hand on heart that this is a 100% genuine piped tab. A fine original used tab certainly yes but been that configuration for 68 years+ ... no.

But as you all know I'm an old sceptic

As Felix said collecting ss you have to be sceptical there are so many fakes and items altered post war to bump up the price.
As you know i did own this tab and i believe it to be period done. The reverse of the piping has ware that suggests it may have rubbed up against the collar.
The tab it's self is quite stiff as if something was spilt on it i'm not sure as to what that may have been.
I think what is off putting to people is seeing the contrast of the shiney bullion cord against the handshcar symbol which is faded and stained, which gives the impression of the bullion looking newer and freshly added.
Rob if you like it go for it ,but don't just buy it because i believe it to be period.
There is plenty of time before the auction begins and ends have a good look through old threads and on the net at other examples of enlisted tabs that have been upgraded to get a feel for them.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
                    Cheers
                    Dave.
