That one is a period example, probably prewar.

                    I've often wondered that myself

I believe what are considered as SS pips are the ones with a dome instead of a hole (like this one) in the center.

Correct, that's the type considered to be ss by many - the one shown is not.

Yet of course all sorts of pips were used.

                        Cheers

Yes, uncountable amounts of pictures of both types being worn .... in aluminium, brass silverplated etc. Did have some with RZM marking, mostly not.

Really ???? I am trying so hard not to roll on the floor laughing at this discussion...not at the guy who started it it was a legit question ....ALL sorts of pips were used by the SS and yes there were some special made for the them as well and stamped RZM SS on them....but the types of pips used by the SS was so vast and numerous a conversation is just silly.

Exactly, does raise a smile with me too but hey ... it's a question, the degree of taking it seriously is up to those who read or answer. By the way, it says "RZM marked" pips .... not "RZM SS" marked pips . But that's simply a matter of reading or interpretation I guess. Main point is that all kinds of pips have been or were used ... should I say, in my opinion or what period pictures show. Best, Seth.
