IJ3 Colonel Vogel Desert Uniform - Real or Not?

I was watching Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade the other day, and I was wondering about the SS uniform that Standartenführer Vogel was wearing in the desert tank chase. It was a pebble brown (greyish khaki) color. It appears to be an M32 officer tunic, but that seems a bit odd for the desert. Shouldn't he be wearing an SS tropical uniform? If anyone can offer some insight, that would be very helpful.

Times were tough back then . . .

With the shortage of materials, maybe that tunic is all that was available to an SS Officer in 1989 ???

I'm not sure. Maybe it was a defective repro, as the closest thing I can find to Vogel's uniform was the white summer SS uniform. I also find it strange that his aguilette is black rather than silver. Maybe it was an aesthetic choice?

I also think Lucas and Spielberg were trying to get that old 30's and 40's matinee vibe with the IJ series (at least until the epic disaster that was Crystal Skull). Most of the uniforms were way off, or had not even been designed for the period In which the movies were set. I was impressed with the Artillery tunic that Indy wore for a bit in Last Crusade. I thought that one was pretty convincing!

On the contrary. Most of the uniforms in Raiders of the Lost Ark were fairly accurate, except for a few errors like Dietrich's mismatched insignia (Jager collar tabs with infantry shoulder boards) and in one scene where two soldiers have mismatched gear (MP38s with K98 ammo pouches)(MP38s in a movie set in 1936?). For the most part though, they got the fact that most soldiers carried K98s in RotLA. As for TLC, it had the uniform error of Vogel's black aguilette, along with all SS troops in Castle Brunwald being armed with MP40s (in 1938!). Also, in the desert, Vogel is commanding Wehrmacht troops, despite him being in the SS. I would also point out that the Wehrmacht soldiers are wearing SS armbands. Lastly, Vogel is wearing British goggles. Why?! But I have to agree, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a cinematic trainwreck.

No French cuffs on the Herr Oberführer's uniform tunic? Was ist los? A sidearm with the aforementioned black parade aiguilette? Black piped breeches? A black shirt? A political brassard on the EM next to the Sultan?

Yep, they are British anti-gas goggles, they came in a cardboard pack of 3 (or 6) and fit in the pocket of a gas mask bag
