It is something unusual , that is for sure, But I feel that, what I see , looking objectively, IS a shovel usually associated with labor, A stone masons pick or a stone cutters pick, (not a mountain climbers ) an anchor, and an ss insignia on an interesting water like backround.

I also see two rings to hang the item from something, possibly a chain, The hole in the anchor tip at the bottom, seems it may have been for hanging something else from, but what I have no idea.

Maybe it is something relating to slave labor related to stone cutting or some SS mining operation , but how the anchor fits in, is anybodys guess, but ore, and stone is hauled by ship...There was a stone cutting slave labor site I seem to recall where they cut stone and carried it up steps , and many were worked to death....someone here may recall the location,as I can see it in my minds eye, but its location escapes me at the moment. Hitler had big plans for massive stone and marble lined buildings for post war, and built lots of buildings that required stone cutting until the war went south in the russian campaign, and then much was put on hold.

IMO, this items is so well made, it appears to be related to something from the period , and just could be something authentic , I like it, but other than what I guesstimated, its true origin may never be discovered , until it shows up in a period photograph .But hope springs eternal, and don't give up searching.

Now if you could share with us what you know about it , or any story or pertinent information you are holding if any, it may help in its authentication, if you know anything at all.

The one side has been exposed to the elements maybe salt air, as I can not recall any ss stone cutting minor divisions attached to the kriegsmarine , for example, but they ss had ships like the prinz eugen , but even with the polished finish , if the finish is nickle even nickle can oxidize like that through time.

I would snag that if I were you , and even if not positively identified today, this is something you will want to keep until the future day, its real purpose is discovered. I hope someone has more to say on other theorys as to other possibilities, but I don't feel it is related to what you asked about ,as there is no shovel and stone tool on that insignia you refer to , but do not fret...this is still exciting and very cool to say the least...
