    SS Sniper Camo Photo...

Considering the prices much less desirable SS photos have been commanding on Ebay as of late, I'm amazed this one went for only 76 Euros...

The 98k on the left clearly exhibits a Sniper Scope (ZF-41 or ??)

ZF41 was not for real snipers. It was issues for above average marksmen.

...and exactly what did these "Above Average Marksmen" shoot at in the front lines with their ZF41 scoped 98Ks ??? (Jack) Rabbits ??? Empty Ayinger Bräu-Hell Bottles ??? Winston Churchill cut-outs ??? C'mon now......

                zf-41

I would rather use open iron sights than that crappy ZF-41 Scope.

Correct - the ZF41 was a better "Zielhilfe" (aiming help), no sniper ever used it. Of course today they are offered as "snipers scopes" to get more money...

No doubt Mr. ZF41 was only in the front lines for comic relief and unit morale - sort of a Wannabee German Bing CroSSby type with a scoped walking stick...most likely his "Potato Mashers" were made from real potatoes also...

If the fellow has actually a scope mounted on his rifle it is not practical, hence the location of the "scope".

A scope does not now nor did it then suddenly equal a sniper. There was a school you had to attend back then and there is a school you have to go to now. By your logic every Designated Marksman in the US Army is a qualified sniper which is utter BS.

I agree with Gran Sasso on how they are marketed as well as the on target evaluation of the ZF41 as a so called 'sniper' scope.

The photograph itself is very nice as were the others offered up.

Interesting observations (e.g. Scope, Schooling, etc) in regards to what differentiated an "Above average marksman" from a "True Sniper". Those unfamiliar with the history of Josef 'Sepp' Allerberger should note the path he took in regards to going from being his unit's leading "Above average markman" to "True Sniper"....that read alone will open a lot of eyes - and dispell a lot of beliefs - in regards to rifles / scopes / "aiming aids" prefered in the field as opposed to those that were available in the field, "official" sniper schooling (or lack thereof) and how one did not have to be a graduate of an "official" Sniper School to be credited with a "Sniper Kill", the criteria / qualifications required in regards to an official "sniper kill" (in which the type of scope - or "aiming aid" - used had absolutely no bearing at all), etc.

A lot of the ZF41 comments here sound like they have just been regurgitated from a mid-70's "Guns '& Ammo" magazine, not factual comments based on German military weapon directives, orders, regulations, etc. As for my "logic" (which now somehow magically and conveniently applies to the US Army) I can only laugh - the only thing you get in the US Army as a "Marksman" is (then as now) a cute little crossed rifle patch for your sleeve, not a scope for your field rifle....clearly more than one person here is missing the point in regards to why specific German soldiers in WW 2 were issued scopes / "aiming aids" for front line use, regardless of the type they were issued...

I agree that the ZF-41's are (technically) indeed not truly considered sniper equipment...(but offered/sold as such in modern times)...
Its just an aiming "aid" and less powerfull than true sniper scopes which btw are mounted differently and have eye cups, the latter being key
                              for "true" sniper use!
