The patch would distinguish the man to also be holding a rank in the SS. Killer tunic!!

I understand that the SS insignia means the member holds rank in the SS. But why? Did he have two uniforms in his closet? Was he in a reserve branch kinda like police officers in the US can be in the military reserves? What was the benefit? I really know nothing about this program. Please explain.

Also, when a police officer held rank in the SS, would it be the same rank he held as a police officer?

                        Thanks

Most importantly, that is one great tunic! I have never before seen a Police General's tunic with the SS insignia.

Ade Stevenson has nicely explained the purpose of the police runes here:

Here is the name tag in the inside pocket, the tag is rather yellowed with age and the name will eventually fade away to nothing, Had to get a real good closeup of the tag so the date could be seen, the date is 14/8/41.

Here is a very short bio of Brunner

SS Brif u Gen Maj der Pol K BRUNNER
                              was a former SD officer
he headed Gestapo Office Munchen from 37 to 40
then he became Inspector SIPO SD in Salzburg
