Gentlemen, gentlemen.....ple-e-e-ease take a deep breath. First of all, it says 1939-1945 right on the blade, so the period is correct. And it's a well-known historical fact that elements of Otto Skorzeny's SS commando unit threw away their scabbards in compliance with Hitler's "Permanent Fixed Bayonet" orders that were given to SS Commando units, and therefore were not needed. In their place, SS insignia were often soldered to the blade. These crude insignia are actually WARTIME PIECES, as they were procured from local "biker club" shops located just outside Berlin, obviously due to wartime shortages. A no-brainer if you ask me.

Totenhead - Don't take offense - Just making fun of the elaborate stories that some dealers or sellers tell - not you. I don't even know if it's a biker's badge or not. Ironically, there were MANY personalizations that WERE period done. The big problem with such items is that there is often no practical way to tell WHEN a personalization was made. Because SO MANY original artifacts are post-war embellished, those items that were period-modified are automatically tainted. That's why personalized items are almost always met with extreme skepticism on the forums. In this expensive hobby, that's always healthy. Ironically, I'd bet there were period-modified items shown on this forum that were laughed at and mocked. But IMO, it's unwise to invest in such items, as you'll spend more time explaining the item than enjoying it.
