    Rzm codes

The 57 code found on early ss belt buckles has been linked to M. Winter. The early ss skull buttons marked 57 have code stamps with a very similar font if not the same font as the buckles , I have seen pics on this forum with 57 marked SS buckles with the initials M W ( that got my attention). M1 is for insignia and M1/57 is M. Winter so following this path M1/63 would be S&L Ludenscheid. It gets foggy when buckles should come under the M4 class and M4/57 is Julius Maurer,Oberstein . As for the skull buttons , I concur that 57 preceeded 63 , going further the dies are so close many think they are the same maker but there is no paper trail linking these companies that is known. I hope this helps, the info provided is just my opinion of the old thread data provided by the many knowledgable members in our Forum.

      63 skull button Maker ?

Derek and Brad shared good insight on what went on in Manufacturing codes, RZM contracts etc. ; this could indicate that the "M" codes took awhile to mature into their specialized product groups.

M1= insignia M4=Belt Buckles M5=Uniform fittings and Buttons

      M1/57 M4/2 M5/69 are all .......M. Winter

      M1/63 M4/49 M5/82 are all .....S&L Ludenscheid

M5/63 is ..................................Hans Schulz & Co , Oppach

I have seen two early SS belt Buckles with identical obverse and reverse construction with different maker codes, 57 on one and 63 on the other

We also know early SS skull buttons for use on the M-34 overseas caps are 57 marked as well as 63 marked .

But alas , now enter the M5/69 marked skull button into the mix.

I believe M. Winter made the 57 marked skull buttons and they surely also made the M5/69 version.

The SS buckle 57/63 evidence gives a strong case for M. Winter =57 and S&L =63.

In conclusion I cannot rule out S&L or Hans Schulz Co, Oppach as the Maker for the 63 marked skull buttons

        Kale,
To the best of my knowledge the categories were formalised and first published by the RZM in March, 1935.
Unfortunately I have never been able to locate a separate SS code list for items not carrying the standard RZM codes.

              Codes

One important thing to remember is that the same manufacturer had a different code number for M1 items, than they did for M5 items, for example.
