Perhaps this link (to the GD.Com SS uniform forum) may help clarify things for you....look at the post near the bottom of page 1 by the esteemed Robert Noss (a.k.a. photosammler.de) showing the different print patters, and more importantly for you,the numbers of each style.

Hope this helps,

because as far as I know Spitfire means the number,s that are in a block visible
on the camouflgae they will go up from 1 to 6
they usuall come up in the early zeltbahn,s
If you have the book from BEaver CAMOUFLAGE UNIFORM,S OF THE W_SS
do tkae a look at the variation of the early plane tree print, ssigpicalways seeking = BEVO Cap and breast insignia

Hello,
Helmet covers were ink-stamped for size (near the centre-rear rocker) with the numbers 1, 2 or 3; the PLANE TREE pattern camouflage would occasionally have the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 - which was the pattern number itself. W-SS smocks never had size numbers - they came in one size: very large.
Hope this helps,
Mike

Opps,
I will stick with my first post, a gut feeling on this one, on Army smocks you do see the size markings, and on other camo items, What spitfire was refering to was probably the printed numbers on camo, Yes Mike C 1through 7 is correct
Mike C Army smocks not ss smocks I should of made that clear.
