    National armshields in wear

    Hello folks and militaria collectors,

    Which national armshields would considered the rarest and had never been photographed nor documented in wear?

    Lately, I saw a photo in a thread in Axis History Forum of men from Poulos Verband wearing the Greek armshield, something that has never been published before in books by Angolia, Andrew Mollo and Hugh Page Taylor.

    Also, I was wondering has anyone seen any photos of the Romanian armshield in wear?

      IMHO, Romanian shield was never worn for two reasons:

      1. There was no romanian volunteer units in German army (accept obscure romanian ss brigade, pics show them wearing no shields of any kind)
      2. The known "Romanien" shield was intended for rom. volunteers in Org. Todt formation. Its hard to say if such shield was ever worn - the only volunteers in German labor forces that got to wear shields seemed to be few Western nations - French, Norwegians, Dutch, Flemish and Waloons. I believe that such shields as Romanien, Ukraine, Bulgarien, Estland, Lettland, Litauen and Russland were made but never distributed to be worn.

        Hi Askold,

        David Littlejohn's Foreign Legion of the Third Reich series had several interesting chapters dedicated to foreign volunteers in OT, NSKK, and other paramilitary units besides Waffen SS and Wehrmacht.

        I even saw several photos circulating in the Internet of Lithuanian Baudienst (Construction Service?) volunteers wearing a triangular armshield (I believed the only triangular armshield design for foreign volunteers) with Lithuanian colors but this was soon disregarded and it was changed to the Waffen SS armshield style.

        I believed that there are still a lot of unpublished photos in the archives of Eastern European nations involved in WW2. Unfortunately, not much has been uncovered even after more than 60 years the end of WW2

          Hi am fully aware of this publication There are no photos of Romanian shields in wear as there were no official Romanian volunteer units in German Wehrmacht as far as I know. There are numerous variations of Lithuanian shields, most of which were in fact worn.
