    New British Free Corps Photograph

Gentleman, a real scoop courtesy of my friend Guy Walters (see http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hunting-Evil-Guy-Walters/dp/0553819399/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1267636857&sr=8-1
    )

As far as I know, this a completely new photograph of SS-Unterscharfuehrer Roy Nicholas Courlander in BFC uniform, and the only known photo showing the Union Flag patch being worn on the right arm (as specified by Himmler from July 44 onwards). This copy is from a screen capture: I hope to have a better quality capture very soon.

I should add, it comes in tandem with this. A screen capture of a known photo but in much higher quality:

      Basil:
Wonder why this book cover shows the Hindenburg funeral at
Tannenberg with non-NAZI Imperial German flags center? Maybe
you can ask your author friend? Just curious, as it doesn't quite fit.

Because publishers use images with no reference to authors, as any adult would probably surmise.

...and unlike you, I suspect he can spell Tannenberg, Hindenberg and all those other tricky German words.

Was not trying to annoy, just ask a question about the book.

His death in many respects represents the final event that put Hitler into power and when the "nazi" era began so given the title it works for me. Aside from that I suspect it is one of the few images of a large group with Hitler clearly shown in it that does not have swastikas shown hence a "good safe choice" for the publisher to get around the ban on open displays of swastikas in many countries etc. or PC concerns of book sellers.

              ????

Just to get my thoughts arranged around this. I referenced Guy Walters's book to demonstrate that he is a serious researcher. Today, when working at the UK National Archives, he found the photo in post 1. This is the first BFC picture to be found in 28 years (almost exactly - I found the last two in the Berlin Document Center in Feb 1982). This is only the 8th photo to be found showing BFC insignia being worn.

OK, boring, let's talk about a dummy book cover on Amazon...

                Basil,

Any finds on BFC is of major interest, at least IMHO.

                Thanks for sharing,
                Felix

                  Hello Basil.

Is there a possibility that there are more 'new find' photos in the National Archives? I have no knowledge of the archives nor an inclination to spend many hours searching I'm merely intrested.

BTW, Guy Walters book is very intresting and informative, don't let the new cover put anyone off. This is not the original cover.

                  Chris.

Ah, PC, now I get it, thanks for your insightful answer. Guess the PC thing
would rule out the cover use of the BFC "Our Flag Is Going Forward Too"
period poster. Just looked at Littlejohn's 1981 book "Foreign Legions of the
Third Reich", his volume two, which only has seven pages on the BFC. It does
show a couple of faceless BFC uniform photos, which I assume at one time
could get you hung like Lord Hah Hah. Since my own contribution to Littlejohn's
book (page 285 photo) from my collection, I've been interested in SS related
volunteer units, did the BFC have a unit flag? Or do any unique BFC flags show
up in the cited more recent book on the BFC or elsewhere in some trooping
                      formation photos? Again just curious.

Are the new images from negatives and the archives or private sources?

I should clarify the above, what was the primary source, were they from Military files or private resources in the archives etc?
