I've seen a few stripped down versions of these from the Handschar division, and I know there's red and gray. Was the insignia metal, or just cloth? Was red just for dress and gray used in the field or what? What could one expect to pay for a complete red one? I'm looking maybe to get one to go with my tab just for looks.

I suggest you Invest in some reference books first.
SS fez were produced with bevo woven enlisted insignia and also with bevo flatwire officer's insignia.
Here is a thread from another collector seeking to buy one:

Many years ago you could buy these very cheap. From the prices mentioned in the above thread, If you can find a red one for 500 or less you are doing well. The green field fezz are more rare and sell for approximately twice the price of the red.
I haven't seen many convincing fakes of these.. has anyone else?

There are many photos of metal visor insignia used on various SS field headgear.
The issue with collecting these pieces now is many enterprising people have added these insignia to caps post war and there is no way to verify it was a wartime modification. That is why many collectors only want to find pieces that are "textbook" or original untouched examples.
Peter Whammond has a stripped down red fez for sale:

"there is a photo in some SS headgear book that shows a period photo of a member of the Handschar division wearing a fez with metal insignia. I'm not sure what book it is in though"
I have also seen a picture like that, again same problem cannot remember which book, but I think it was a picture of an officer wearing the fez with metal insignia
cheers,
Gary

Hi Guys, it has been bugging me for days where I had seen a photo showing metal insignia in wear on a fez. Finally it has come to mind
Page 270 in Jack Angolia's cloth SS insignia book. The photo shows an SS Haptsturmfuhrer (Fachfuhrer).
I wonder if it is the same photo as mentioned by Brian? Does he have a blank collar tab and an other ranks M43 pattern uniform?
Cheers, Ade.
