My ex father in laws father volunteered to join the SS in 43 after his house was bombed, and supposedly Socialist leaflets were found. I can't confirm the story, bu that is what I was told. I've read of similar stories, but don't know if they are just that, "stories". Would strike me as plausible, but also as a plausible way to deny volunteering for the SS ex post facto.

My Grandmothers one Uncle was forced into the Waffen SS. He initially refused and said he would join the wehrmacht, they then threatened his family so then he joined. I don’t know if it would be considered conscription or not. They wanted him because he was 6’6” blond hair blue eyes. That part of my family was extremely against the NSDAP and didn’t want any part of any organizations associated with it. So I know there was no way he would have joined willingly. His three other brothers were only around 6ft and served in the wehrmacht, two in Luftwaffe and the other one in U-Boats.Comment
